Easy Reindeer Chow

Christmas is the best time for everyone to gather together and eat all the snacks. I notice that the adults tend to go for more salty snacks like Cheesy Chex Mix or Buffalo Ranch Chex while the kids often ask for sweet snacks like Snickerdoodle Chex Mix or Oreo Popcorn. There’s no right or wrong here because all of them taste delicious!

This Christmas Reindeer Chow Snack Mix has both the savoriness from the peanut butter with the sweetness from the chocolate chips. Then add all the yummy treats like M&M’s, chocolate-covered pretzels, and more chocolate chips and this snack is irresistible! It’s such a fun festive snack that both kids and adults enjoy at family gatherings, and parties, or add to a cookie and treats box.

Ingredients

  • Chex Cereal– Rice Chex is tasty in this recipe since it’s more sweet but you could use corn as well.
  • Peanut Butter– Creamy peanut butter is much easier to use than crunchy.
  • Semi-Sweet Chocolate– Any brand of chocolate will taste good to coat the cereal.
  • Butter– This helps to thin out the chocolate and peanut butter so it covers all the cereal.
  • Confectioners Sugar– Also known as powdered sugar, this helps coat the cereal and keep the chocolate peanut butter filling inside.
  • Chocolate Covered Pretzels, M&M’s, and Chocolate Chips

*See the printable recipe card at the bottom of the page for detailed instructions and a list of ingredients.

How To Make Christmas Snack Mix

  1. Prep the cereal: Pour the Chex cereal into a very large bowl. You’ll need this to hold 6 cups worth of cereal and also be able to stir it around.
  2. Melt chocolate spread: Microwave the butter, peanut butter, and chocolate chips in a medium bowl. I’ve found that microwaving for 30 seconds, stirring, then microwaving in 15-second increments until almost melted helps prevent the chocolate from burning. Just stir until fully melted.
  3. Mix: Pour the chocolate mix over the Chex cereal and stir it well until all the cereal is coated.
  4. Cover in powdered sugar: If your bowl has a lid, add the powdered sugar directly to the bowl, cover, and shake to coat. You can also pour it into the freezer bag of powdered sugar and shake it to cover the cereal. It will take several shakes to get it all coated.
  5. Add mix-ins: Sprinkle in the M&M’s, chocolate-covered pretzels, and chocolate chips. Enjoy!

Variation Ideas

This snack mix is really easy to switch up to to suit your tastes. Here are a few ideas to try:

  • Swap the chocolate for hazelnut spread.
  • Try using Crispix cereal or Chocolate Chex instead of Rice Chex.
  • Sprinkle in some nuts like peanuts or almonds.
  • Add in more mix-ins like peanut butter cups, marshmallows, or sprinkles.
  • Use any flavor of chocolate like dark, milk, or white.

Storage Options

To store: Allow it to completely cool and store in an air-tight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.

To freeze: This can be made ahead and frozen in an air-tight container for up to 2 months. It tastes really yummy cold too!
