Just like my Crock Pot Applesauce, this Easy Slow Cooker Plum Butter is the kind of set-it-and-forget-it recipe that rewards you with big flavor and hardly any effort. Sweet, smooth, and perfectly spiced, it’s a cozy spread you’ll want for breakfast or dessert to slather on biscuits, pancakes, or even swirl into oatmeal.

Ingredients

  • Plums– Use ripe, sweet plums. Red or black plums both work, and no need to peel them. I used Red for these pictures and it gives it a similar look to peach butter.
  • Sugar– I noticed that plums tend to be a little tart so I used a little extra sugar than with my other butter recipes. But adjust the amount according to your tastes and the tartness of your plums.
  • Cinnamon– Adds warmth and spice. You could also use pumpkin pie spice or cloves for a different variety.
  • Lemon juice– Balances the sweetness and helps preserve freshness.

Instructions

This plum butter is easy to make. All you have to do is:

  1. Wash, pit, and quarter the plums.
  2. Add plums, sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice to a crock pot. Stir to combine.
  3. Cook on low for 8–10 hours until plums are soft and broken down.
  4. Blend with an immersion blender until smooth.
  5. Optional: For a thicker butter, cook uncovered on LOW for and additional 1–2 more hours, stirring occasionally, until thickened.
  6. Cool, then store in jars.

Storage Options

Refrigerator – Store in airtight jars up to 3 weeks.

Freezer – Freeze in freezer-safe containers up to 6 months.

Canning – For longer storage, follow safe water bath canning guidelines.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between plum jam and plum butter?

Jam is made with fruit and sugar and usually set with pectin, while fruit butters (like this plum butter) are cooked down until thick and smooth, with no added pectin.

Do you have to peel plums for plum butter?

Nope! The skins soften during slow cooking and blend right in. If you prefer a lighter texture, you can peel them first.

Ingredients

  • 4 pounds plums pitted and quartered
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

Instructions

  • Add plums, sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice to slow cooker. Stir well.
